MySMN Internship: What’s Your Social Media Platform?

Facebook? Twitter? Pinterest?

Different companies will use different social media platforms as their main marketing avenues. Depending on what type of company and their associated target audiences, certain social media will be more desirable in their marketing strategies.

One of the main things to focus on that couples with social media marketing is that it isn’t always used as a way of generating sales, but more so to remind their audience that they are there to cater to customers. Facebook is the most popular social media platform that My Social Marketing Network utilizes for their clients. A general rule that they apply is called the 80/20 rule, where 80% of the posts is non-product content and 20% of the posts are directly related to the product. This just means that the company’s audience is not constantly bombarded with deals, advertisements, or unwanted spamming from the company. Instead, most of the posts are subtle tips that highly correlate with the company’s products, but will captivate their audience rather than bore them.

An example of this is the client Mattress World. This is a family owned, San Diego based, mattress company that focuses on organic and chemical-free mattresses. Their social media does not focus on advertising their mattress products once or twice a day, but instead uses sleeping tips, mattress facts, and other related topics as a friendly reminder to their audience that they are a company that will stays present on social media.

Now, how do you know which social media platform is the best for you? Some companies thrive on twitter, and others could not live without Pinterest. Realize and understand the type of social media that you are trying to utilize. Companies like the former client, Remodel Works, succeeds greatly on Pinterest. This is a local bathroom and kitchen remodel company; DIY and home design is their specialty, which are some of Pinterest’s most popular topics. You must be aware of the type of marketing each social media platform can offer and cater strategies to the diversity of these platforms.
